• Forward flow: When fluid flows in the intended direction, the pressure forces the disc to lift away from its seat, allowing the fluid to pass through the valve with minimal resistance.
• Reverse flow: When the flow stops or reverses, the back pressure pushes the disc against the seat, sealing the valve and preventing backflow.
• Spring assistance: Many disc check valves are spring-loaded to ensure faster and more reliable closure. The spring provides a closing force, making the valve more sensitive to pressure changes and reducing the risk of water hammer. 

• Wafer disc check valve: A compact, lightweight valve designed to be "sandwiched" between two pipe flanges. It uses one or two spring-loaded discs that pivot on a central hinge.
• Lift disc check valve: This valve features a disc that moves vertically to allow flow. It can use either a spring or gravity to return the disc to its seat and close the valve.
• Tilting disc check valve: A high-performance valve where the disc pivots near its center. This design prevents the disc from slamming shut, reducing the risk of water hammer.
• Silent disc check valve: Specifically designed to prevent water hammer by using an in-line spring to assist the disc in closing as soon as pressure decreases.
